Part Complete Class 40 (Express 40) for Sale

The Owen Clarke designed Express 40 was a semi production Class 40 built to the highest standards from high quality materials by experienced engineers and boat builders. There are 4 yachts sailing at the moment, the first one having covered in excess of 20,000nm since its build. The boats are extremely fast and with Owen Clarke's proven hull form are very competitive all round performers.

When the original builders of the boats were litigated out of business, this unfortunately left boat No. 5 partially built. SV Composites Ltd took over the build for owner of the boat however his circumstances changed and after a few months he halted the build and the boat was put into storage. SV Composites are now selling the boat on behalf of the owner.

Boat as is

The structure of the boat is epoxy foam sandwich which has been expertly infused to give an exceptionally light, stiff and very strong structure.

The composite structure is 85% finished with all of the structural beams and longitudinals completed, most of the bulkheads installed and the remaining items already trimmed to shape waiting to be bonded in. The deck and its structure has been made and is almost ready to be bonded on to the hull. Remaining to be made are 3 sheets of flat panel from which would be cut saloon seating, chart table and a non structural half bulkhead and a few sundry items. The false "crash" bow also needs to be made.

2 x SS shroud chain plates and aluminium mast base
Non-certified (very strong but use at your own risk!) spreader/lifting bar for hull and deck
Custom Steering components (2 x cranked tiller arm and 4 x rudder bearings)
Construction cradles that the boat is sitting on
Drawings providing sufficient information for a competent boat builder to be able to finish the composite construction.
Supporting documentation to assist with the installation of systems and deck gear to the suggested arrangement.

For comparison a new Express 40 was for sale at £192,000 ex VAT, Sails, Safety and Electronics

Estimate from highly regarded IOW boat builder with Open 60 and America's cup experience for his team complete the boat to a sealed structural shell with engine installed (to be purchased separately), ready for paint prep, of approx £34,000 (no VAT) - including composite materials, a build shed and labour of a team of 3 for 12 weeks. Painting cost depends on level of finish, paints chosen etc but around 2K to 4K if done professionally

Approximate equipment cost for keel, engine, carbon mast, rig, rudders, winches, deck hardware and interior tankage etc £49,000 +VAT, download spreadsheet breakdown here. NB contingency should be allowed for on these figures as they are mostly based on purchase cost of items by the original builder in 2008 (though some components have been recently updated).
